■ こぎん刺しとはの説明
Japanese:
「こぎん刺しは、青森県の津軽地方に伝わる伝統的な刺しゅうです。もともとは寒さをしのぐために、麻の布に木綿の糸で刺して強く、暖かくしていたんですよ。」
English:
Kogin embroidery is a traditional stitching method from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture.
It was originally developed to make linen clothing warmer and stronger by stitching with cotton thread.

■ こぎん刺しと菱刺しの違い
Japanese:
「こぎん刺しは、布目を基本的に奇数の1、3、5で数えて、左右対称の模様を作るのが特徴です。一方、菱刺しは南部地方の刺しゅうで、偶数の目も使ったり、色糸を多く使ったりします。」
English:
Kogin embroidery uses odd numbers—1, 3, 5 threads—to create symmetrical patterns.
Hishizashi, from southern Aomori, allows even numbers and uses more colorful threads and freer designs.

■ 図案の読み方
Japanese:
「こちらが図案です。横の段に沿って進みます。縦を縦糸の目と数えて、黒いマス目は布の上に糸がでる部分を表しています。黒い部分の数を数えて、布の縦糸をその分跨いで刺していきます。」
English:
This is the pattern chart. We follow it row by row, counting the vertical warp threads.
The black squares show where the thread appears on the surface. Count the black boxes, and stitch across that number of vertical threads.

■ 針に糸を通すコツ
Japanese:
「糸はあまり長くしすぎないのがコツです。見本をします。人差し指と親指でしっかりと挟み、針穴を押し込むように当てます。試してみてください。他の方法はこのようにします。」
English:
The key is not to make the thread too long. I’ll demonstrate.
Pinch the thread firmly with your index finger and thumb, and push it straight into the needle eye. Try it yourself. Here’s another way if that’s tricky.

■ 刺し始め
Japanese:
「最初は裏から針を出して、3目跨ぎ、表から針を刺します。次は5目跨ぎ、3目開けます。図案の黒い箇所は糸が布の表に出て、白い箇所は糸が布の下を通ります。」
English:
Start from the back of the fabric and stitch across 3 threads to the front. Then skip 3 threads and stitch over 5.
In the pattern, black squares mean the thread is visible on the front, and white areas mean the thread passes underneath.

■ 作業の説明（針の抜き差し、糸の引っぱり方など）
Japanese:
「糸を引くときは、ピンと張らず、少しゆとりを持たせると布がつれずにきれいに仕上がります。一段進んだら、布と糸の調節をします。このように。折り返す際は糸にゆとりを残します。ゆとりがないと端の模様が潰れてしまいます。」
English:
When pulling the thread, don’t pull it too tight—leave a little slack so the fabric doesn’t pucker. After each row, adjust the tension like this.
When turning back at the edge, leave a bit of looseness, or the end pattern may get crushed.

■ 糸どめの仕方
Japanese:
「最後は裏側で1〜2針、前の糸の間を通すように返して刺しておくと糸がほどけません。残りは布近くで切ってください。ハサミで切るときは、布を切らないように気をつけてくださいね。」
English:
At the end, pass the needle through 1–2 stitches on the back side, threading between the previous stitches.
Then trim the remaining thread close to the fabric, being careful not to cut the cloth.
